Fire plans won't lead to job c

THIS week, we heard the Government has given us the go-ahead to build four new fire stations.

That's great news for Gloucestershire, and it's disappointing the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) don't see it as a good thing.

In the article in yesterday's Citizen, the FBU claimed money being spent on new fire stations in Gloucestershire should be used to stop firefighter jobs being cut. There are two major problems with this - the money Ajax silversmith blanks in question could not be spent in that way and there are no firefighter jobs being lost.

We need new fire stations because, since the old ones were built, Gloucestershire's towns, cities and villages have changed considerably. We need fire engines and firefighters in the right place to ensure that, when a 999 call comes in, we can respond quickly.

Because of that, the Government has agreed to provide funding for these new stations. The money is a one-off lump sum - and we would not be allowed to spend it for any other purpose.

Fashion MARC JACOBS

I also find it strange the FBU linked the new fire stations to an old road rescue appliance that might not be replaced in Stroud.

In the last few years, we have invested in putting specialist cutting equipment into normal fire engines, so they can respond locally to road accidents. We've done the same in Stroud, Blancpain Replica so there's an argument that it would not make sense to replace the specialist appliance there, which has reached the end of its life.

We're talking to staff though to get their views, and we will be consulting with the public too.

Having cutting equipment on all our fire engines means getting those tools to an accident faster with more firefighters to operate them. We've trialled this system successfully in the north Cotswolds, Tewkesbury and the Forest of Dean and we know it will help us to save lives.

Despite what the FBU have said, no firefighters would lose their jobs - although they might be redeployed to other stations. This is about improving how we work, not cutting jobs.

House music inspires standing

I GUESS when a band as sophisticated and accomplished as Crowded House go on tour they thrive on re-jigging the set list every night - - if set list there is at all.

Obviously this makes for a far more interesting tour for them and to a certain extent for us, but also by the very nature of the thing there are bound to be some shows that work better than others.

This one started off well enough. The rosy glow that emanated from the stage courtesy of strategically placed goose and toadstool- shaped lamps was reflected in the lush warm vibe of the music, creating a magical mood that enveloped the Replica watches entire arena from the start.

Fall At Your Feet was an early winner -- the familiar melancholy beauty of the melody, enhanced by those trademark rich vocal harmonies: then the McCartney-esque ballad Not The Girl You Think You Are, with fathom-deep electric stand-up bass, proved a particularly satisfying addition to the set.

Throughout the show the well-preserved, suited and booted Antipodean quartet showed effortlessly consummate Replica watches musicianship with occasional room for improvisation -- though I would love to have heard more of those free-flowing jazz piano breaks from Mark Hart -- and floppy-haired front-man Neil Finn frequently switched guitars, taking his turn at the stag motif keyboard console for Archers' Arrows, from forthcoming album Intriguer.

Surprisingly this was one of few new tracks in the show and the new album barely received a mention.

Inter-song banter was plentiful: Nick Seymour had apparently only just Replica watches made the Plymouth show having lost his way on a pre-match cycle ride, so jokes at his expense abounded -- and the bass player ended up doing several circuits of the stage when his bike was produced later in the proceedings, accompanied by Neil's honky tonk version of the Push Bike Song. Having started in mellow mode, the Crowdies upped the ante gradually, if a tad disjointedly, adding more rocky numbers to the set which soon had the faithful dancing in the aisles. The encore came earlier than expected, however, and despite featuring the biggie, Weather With You, disappointingly didn't include personal faves Four Seasons or Don't Dream It's Over.

Perhaps it's just the luck of the draw on the night, but the whole thing seemed to end ahead to end ahead of allotted time, though not before the appreciative sellout crowd was on its feet to give them a s t a n d i n g ovation.

Experimental modeling of pile-

INTRODUCTION

General: Most of the jackets have foundation piles through each main leg which are welded to the structure at deck level. Modeling the cyclic inelastic behavior of legs and braces is of utmost importance in any nonlinear dynamic analysis of offshore jackets. In the past years, considerable investigative efforts have focused on understanding the inelastic behavior of offshore structures subjected to severe seismic loadings and numerical methods for predicting this behavior have been developed (15). Numerical efforts on frame behavior used to be evaluated by experimental tests which were all conducted in a simplified condition without modeling the pile above seabed and pile-leg structural interaction.

Brass Brooch

In this study, two scaled 2Dimenional models of a platform are fabricated and tested under cyclic deck displacement to show the effect of pile-leg interaction in inelastic range of deformation. Furthermore the different behavioral aspects of grouted and un-grouted pile-leg interaction are investigated.

Where a structure's piles pass through the legs, the primary pile/structure connection is typically made by welding the pile to the structure and/or by grouting the leg/pile annulus. In this case, the pile leg acts as a composite member. In case of un-grouted leg-piles, the effect of shim plates at elevation of horizontal braces have to be considered (10).

Background and scope: Zayas et al. (14) reported the results of a series of axial cyclic tests on isolated struts representing typical tubular braces in offshore platforms. Zayas et al. (15), reported the experiments on two one-sixth scale models of an X-braced tubular steel offshore platform subjected to cyclic displacements simulating the effects of severe earthquake ground motions. These efforts were numerically studied by Keyvani (11) and Asgarian (4). Ray Clough and Yousof Ghanaat (8) have studied the dynamic elastic and inelastic behavior of one 5/48 scaled model of an X-braced offshore platform made of tubular members. In this platform, a 5/8 scaled model of the jacket tested by Zayas et al. was represented. Earthquake motions used for jacket shaking were modified records using El Centro and Taft recording earthquakes. Linear and nonlinear analyses of the structure on the shaking table were performed using fiber Beam-Column post-buckling element by Asgarian (3).

In this study, a complementary test is conducted in line with Zayas et al. efforts (15) to model the pile-leg real interaction through the connection joint and shim-plates and show the effect of grouting in lateral cyclic behavior of offshore jacket type structures.

The experimental program and the frame models employed are described in section 2 of this paper. Two types of frames, representing the current practices are investigated. In one model, ed hardy wholesale the gap between pile and leg is filled with grout, which is called Grouted frame and the other frame is called Un-grouted. The overall behavior of the experimental model is discussed in section 3 of this paper. Particular attention is paid to the effect of grouting on the deterioration of strength and energy dissipation capacity.

Jacket members behavior in nonlinear range of deformation

Portals: Portals are members with essentially constant axial force and variable lateral displacement (11). The portal behavior of a jacket leg under lateral forces results in a relatively small bending moment at the mid-height of the leg segment between any two adjacent horizontal bracing levels. Grouted and Un-grouted portals beh

Experimental Measurement of Su

ABSTRACT

The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of fluids and surface characteristics on the static friction for metallic contacts. An inclined plane test was fitted with a laser displacement sensor to accurately determine the static friction coefficient. Results were evaluated in terms of fluid, material properties and statistical surface measures as well as the effect of load.

INTRODUCTION

Static friction adversely affects torque requirements of many machine elements in engines, electric actuators, fluid power components, etc. Coach Wallets As the static friction in systems gets larger, more effort is required to initiate movement, this leads to oversized machines with larger masses and lower efficiencies. Unfortunately, static friction is a physical phenomenon that is not yet well understood, particularly when dealing with macroscopic scale interfaces in the presence of a fluid than may be liquid, solid or somewhere in between. Attempts to reduce static friction and wear have included surface coatings, surface finishing techniques and enhanced lubrication mechanisms. In this paper, we report experimental studies of the effects of surface characteristics and fluid properties.

The simplest and most generally applicable method used for measuring friction is the inclined plane. It consists of a test surface of weight W placed on top of a tilting flat surface that is allowed to slide. The orthogonal components of the weight, Fn and F, represent the normal force and friction force, respectively. The tangent of the angle ? at which the test surface starts sliding is identified as the static coefficient of friction (COF).

Previous experimental work on static friction1'10 has given insight into this complex phenomenon, but tend to be very specific in terms of the interface conditions studied. This paper describes measurements using an inclined plane test with varying surface roughness, fluids and normal loads with the goal of gaming a general perspective on the complex, integrated effects of these conditions on static friction.

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP

An inclined plane test apparatus was used for measuring the static friction of three steel surfaces at four load conditions and using five different lubricating conditions. An electric linear actuator was used to slowly increase the angle of the inclined plane at a constant speed of 5 mm/s. The microdisplacement of the load bed over the test surface was recorded using a laser displacement sensor (Keyence LK-G series) which allowed recording the movement of the load to an accuracy of 0.1 pm at a sampling rate of 50 Hz as per the recommendations in ASTM standard G 163-99. Three test surfaces were made from a sheet of carbon steel, each surface having dimensions of 150 mm ? 200 mm. The surfaces were quantitatively compared using the surface parameters shown in Table 2. Additionally, four different fluids were tested to evaluate their influence on the static friction coefficient. The fluids tested and some of their physical properties are given in Table Embroidered patches 3.

A total of approximately 0.150 ml of each fluid was used in every test to try to obtain a full and homogeneous film condition between the surfaces for each run. Each data point would require repeating the procedure 15 times.

Figure 2 shows digitized profiles of the three sample plates and load bed used in the experiment.

Maguire Associates/Fastweb Survey Shows Students Looked Closely at Net Costs; Growing Percentage Saw Private Education as Attractive Option

CONCORD, Mass. -- The recession may be officially over, but ongoing worries about the turbulent economy still influenced the college application choices of this year鈥檚 high school seniors, according to the results of new research by Maguire Associates in association with Fastweb.com, owned by Monster.com(R), the leading job matching engine and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: MWW). The organizations surveyed high school seniors for insights into their college plans and priorities, and the effect of economic conditions on their application behaviors.

Two-thirds of the graduating seniors were still very concerned about the state of the economy; in fact, one out of five said that their parents had lost jobs. This had ramifications as they Bayern Munchen narrowed down their college/university choices. About two-thirds reported that their families鈥?economic concerns 鈥済reatly鈥?or 鈥渟omewhat鈥?influenced where they were applying to college.

Private Education Increasingly Attractive

The 2010 College Decision Impact Survey revealed that students were most interested in attending a public college, especially those seniors who said financial issues had affected their application decisions. However, a notably higher percentage of seniors expressed interest in private education than in last year鈥檚 survey.聽For example, 38 percent of seniors with GPAs of 3.5 or higher expressed interest in attending private institutions versus 29 percent in 2009.

鈥淢any students and families will be willing to invest in colleges and universities that they are convinced will offer the most value or return on their investment,鈥?said Kathleen Dawley, President of Maguire Associates. 鈥淭he challenge for colleges and universities is how to demonstrate the quality of their institution鈥檚 educational experience.鈥?

鈥淔amilies are increasingly focused on the out-of-pocket cost of the college education,鈥?said Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of Fastweb.com. 鈥淣on-profit colleges have been competing with public colleges by LED flood light limiting tuition increases and offering more need-based grants in their financial aid packages. Assessing Institutional Quality

The most important factors that students considered as measures of institutional quality included the variety and depth of courses in their field of interest, followed by availability/quality of academic facilities, percent of students employed after graduation, graduation rates, and student/faculty ratios.

鈥淭he emphasis on graduation rates was striking to us,鈥?said Ms. Dawley. 鈥淎s the financial impact of student retention becomes increasingly important to colleges, students appear to see it as a measure of an institution鈥檚 ability to deliver on its promises.鈥?

Panel on fuels may mull $90 cu

NEW DELHI: The ministerial panel on fuels under finance minister Pranab Mukherjee could meet on June 17 and may discuss the idea of allowing oilmarketing companies to price petrol and diesel according to the market within the cut-off mark of $90 per barrel of international crude.

In case there is no unanimity on the proposal, the panel River Plate may settle for freeing up petrol pricing from government control and raise diesel price by upto Rs 2 a litre.

According to the average of present crude price levels, petrol will become costlier by Rs 3.35 a litre in Delhi. Similarly, diesel price will rise by Rs 3.49 a litre if the fuel is decontrolled. By all accounts, it appears that an agreement may evolve around the idea of freeing up petrol pricing and raising diesel price.

Going by opposition from Trinamool boss and railway minister Mamata Banerjee, the panel may watches-j find it difficult to get all on board to raise cooking gas price by Rs 25 a cylinder. As TOI first reported on June 7, ahead of the panel's first meeting, Mamata had opposed deregulation or steep hike in diesel prices and put her foot down on raising kithcen fuel prices.

The panel had deferred a decision on June 7 as Mamata as well as others such http://www.wubags.com/handbags-e/ as agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, power minister Sushilkumar Shinde and transport minister Kamal Nath were absent. The idea of a cut-off mark has been mooted to soften the opposition to pricing freedom. According to the proposal, the government would step in by reducing taxes or give subsidy.

The cut-off mark is an idea similar to the price-band mechanism that was floated during the initial years of the UPA-1 government which restored government control over motor fuels. Even this idea was later scrapped after crude prices rose beyond the band and remianed at elevated levels.

Paragon facility to create 120

By Ben Benton

Stuttgart

CHATSWORTH, Ga. -- A $147 million plant at Murray County's landfill that can turn household garbage into diesel, kerosene, fertilizer and jet fuel will produce more than 120 jobs, officials said.

Paragon Scientific Inc. CEO and Vice Chairman Paul Peterson said the operation would be a "model" for communities across the nation.

Paragon's facility in Chatsworth will reduce the amount of waste going into the landfill by 85 percent by converting it into carbon-based fuel, Mr. Peterson said. The facility will produce no environmentally toxic emissions, he said.

"We're going to produce a particular substitute for diesel," he said of initial plans. "We can produce jet fuel, we can produce kerosene, we can produce propane. It's whatever the market's driven by."

He said Paragon's initial goal is to produce diesel for the county's vehicles while it develops its market. Murray County's waste will be the "feedstock" for fuel production, he said. He could not discuss the production process in detail due to pending patents, he said.

He said a headquarters in Chatsworth will provide 10 to 15 jobs, and the "conversion" facility at the landfill south of town will put another 120 people to work.

Indirectly, jobs from Paragon's marketing and research and development could total as many as 500 over time, Mr. Peterson said.

The office in town could be in operation by summer, he said.

"We're looking at a potential of about 70 days closing on our financing," he said.

handbags-t

The conversion operation at the landfill could be on line in 12 to 18 months, he said.

The county-owned landfill is leased to operator Santek Environmental, and a 12-acre site within the property is leased to Paragon Scientific, Murray County Commissioner David Ridley said Tuesday. The county public works department will prepare the site for the conversion operation.

"We'll be partnering with them; we haven't determined how much they're going to pay us," Mr. Ridley said.

The commissioner said one negotiating point is "a very reduced rate in fuel for our county vehicles and school system vehicles."

"We're very close to signing our contract; Santek's agreed to it and I've definitely agreed to it," he said.

Josh Smith, watershed director for the Conasauga River Alliance, said he was impressed with the operation's goals and anxious to see it in operation.

"All of it sounds, theoretically, like a great idea environmentally and for the community," he said.

OMDA Oil and Gas, Inc. Issues

OMDA Oil and Gas, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: OOAG) wishes to offer the first in a series of updates on the Concord Dome project. Due diligence on this prospect is ongoing with data being collected from several sources. OMDA is releasing the information as it is being received. Further updates are expected to be reported to the company over the next few weeks which will be released to the public.

The Concord Dome is a reference to an area of about 160 acres in Anderson Manchester City County, Texas with 18 leases housing a number of existing and currently producing oil wells. Third party reports estimate the long term potential of the existing wells on Concord Dome to yield over 1 million barrels of oil. Surrounding the Concord Dome is a vast area of land in the hundreds of acres which may be available for acquisition by OMDA, and is projected to have as abundant an oil supply as Concord Dome itself.

Accurate revenue projections data is still being compiled but preliminary estimates at current oil prices could place OMDA's revenue share over time in the tens of millions of dollars. The company will provide a more detailed breakdown as those reports come in.

Overall production to date has been below reasonable expectations due to several factors. One of those factors was the capping of some of the lesser producing wells in order to make better use of available resources and place focus on the greater producing ones. Perhaps the biggest issue which hampered production was the former lawsuit. With the lawsuit having reached a resolution, production on the existing wells can now be accelerated and increased significantly.

Within the next several weeks OMDA plans on sending one or more members of its management team onsite to meet with the company's drilling partners, tour the facilities, walk every lease and get a firsthand look at the progress to date, as well plans for future drilling. During that visit, detailed pictures and video will be taken of the property, wells, equipment, tank batteries, etc. and placed on the company's website as promised for the benefit of all current and prospective shareholders.

OMDA expects to release the next Concord Dome Update within 7 to 10 days. In that stage 2 report the company will provide more detailed information and a more specific breakdown, including engineering report findings which are forthcoming and will be passed on to the public.

"Concord Dome is a very important and potentially very profitable project for OMDA for many years to come," said Adam Barnett, Chairman and President of OMDA Oil and Gas Inc. "Over the next couple of weeks as we continue to gather and release more details, handbags-h our shareholders will get a more complete picture of the prospect and a much better understanding of its long term potential. Up until now this prospect has not been drilled to anywhere near its potential. Our plans are to work closely with our partners and get the maximum production we can from Concord Dome for the next decade and beyond. We are also considering acquiring some of the surrounding acreage in order to continue to bring more wells online and ultimately harvest much more oil than just the 1,000,000 barrels that are recoverable right now."

In another development, OMDA Oil & Gas, Inc. and its Board of Directors are exploring a Joint Venture opportunity that they feel will be very lucrative and provide an additional revenue stream for the company. This would be an all cash deal. The company should have enough research and negotiations accomplished to share an extensive update on this opportunity next week.

now you can report some crimes

By Kristin Davis

The Virginian-Pilot

A Chesapeake Police Department initiative meant to cut down wait time for residents and free up officers for urgent calls for service went live this month.

The Citizens On-line Police Reporting System - CORPS for short - gives victims of certain nonviolent crimes the option to file police reports online, the police department announced last week.

Complaints about obscene and annoying phone calls, barking dogs, vehicle tampering, damaged property, lost property, bad checks and identity theft can be made by logging onto online-police-reporting.

CORPS is also available for thefts of less than $200 and vandalism in which damages New York Rangers are less than $1,000.

These crimes make up a small portion of all reports, but the majority of them are taken over the phone, Officer Dorienne Boykin said in an e-mail. Filing online saves the police department about 10 to 20 minutes per report.

"For every report submitted online, it is one less phone call that must be answered by dispatch, entered into the dispatch system, then dispatched to either a desk officer or street officer," the watches-y e- mail stated. "This frees up dispatchers to more readily answer emergency calls."

CORPS will work for now for those with e-mail . The police department plans to install kiosks at its headquarters on Albemarle Drive and at the Second Precinct in South Norfolk that will work much the same way.

Once a report is submitted online, the victim will get a temporary report number. Once it is reviewed and approved by staff, an official copy of the report will be sent via e-mail. Residents who prefer to see an officer still have that right, Boykin said. Complaints will be handled the same way regardless of how they are filed.

COPRS has been in the works since last year, she said. A grant paid for the $52,050 program, which will eventually allow victims to file more types of crimes online.

Denial of Christian heritage r

Charles Acker, (letter, June 5) in his denial of America's Christian heritage seems to have revised history.

Roger Williams, founder of the Baptists in America, wrote of a wall around the church to protect it from outside influence. When the Danbury Baptists feared that the new federal government might encroach on their Christian faith, Thomas Jefferson wrote that a "wall of separation" protected them from state intrusion, contrary to Acker's version.

George Washington and John Adams signed their documents "in the year of our Lord"; Jefferson signed his "In the year of our Lord Christ."

Demonstrated in action

Bible Lesson

(1 Thessalonians 4:1-12)

This week's treatment of the International Sunday School Lesson is written by Brad T. Bromling, senior pastor of Issaquah (Washington) Christian Church.

A car zipped by me sporting this bumper sticker: "Jesus is coming soon . . . and boy is He mad!" That sums up what some folks think about Christianity- it's all about an angry God who can't wait to pour out his wrath on anyone who crosses him. What a tragic misunderstanding!

Like most, that bumper sticker contained an element of truth. Over and again in his letters to the Thessalonians, Paul stressed the imminent return of Jesus and the urgency of being ready for that moment. Seven of eight Fake Vacheron Constantin Watches chapters address that matter in one fashion or another (1 Thessalonians 1:10; 2:19; 3:13; 4:13-18; 5:1-11; 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10; 2:1-11), and among other things, Paul acknowledges that in Jesus' return, God will express his wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10; 2:16; 2 Thessalonians 1:8).

If that is all you get out of these letters, you have missed the point altogether! In fact, more central to Paul's message is that properly understanding the second coming fills us with hope and encouragement (1 Thessalonians 4:13, 18). In Christ we have been released from the coming wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10)! Paul, therefore, wants us to understand how to live full and fulfilling lives while we await our Lord's return.

Submit our appetites?

For example, consider 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12. In these verses, Paul offers three guidelines on how to "live in order to please God" (v. 1). In a surprisingly formulaic way, he says, in effect: "Here are three steps that will lead you closer to God's heart!"

First, Paul suggests we release our appetites to Christ: "It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable" (w. 3, 4). There is a legitimate way to fulfill every human hunger. How we treat our appetites reveals whether we are Christian or heathen (the latter term is used by Paul to describe someone who does not know God and is still following his own passionate lusts; see v. 5).

Although this principle is certainly applicable to all human hungers, Paul selects as his example the particularly challenging appetite of sexuality. When we seek sexual fulfillment outside of God's prescribed boundaries of marriage (i.e., one man living out a lifelong commitment to one woman), we are not holy, but impure and living under the threat of punishment (w. 4-8). Yet, when we choose to fulfill our appetites in accord with God's plan, we live in the warmth of his smile.

Love others?

Wallet Replica Handbags

A second step in the right direction is for us to increase our affection toward others (w. 9, 10). Remarkably, the Thessalonians had the benefit of Paul's physical presence among them for only a few weeks (Acts 17:1-15), yet they had already become examples of "brotherly love" throughout their region (v. 10)! Clearly, the second great commandment had captured their hearts and they were eagerly practicing it (see Mark 12:31).

Paul praises them for this and urges them to "do so more and more" (v. 10). This exhortation pushes us beyond the comfort of cliques and out into the broader adventure of expanding the focus of our affections to ever-growing circles of people. Recalling that God's love for humanity

Perfume firm axes all but four

Byline: Elaine Keogh and Yvonne Tarleton

A PERFUME company which created fragrances for brands such as cheap tissot watches copies Lancome, Estee Lauder and Armani is axing all but four of its 100-strong workforce.

The 101 redundancies at Irish Flavours and Fragrances, which opened in Drogheda 30 years ago, were described as part of a 'strategic review' of operations.

It is unclear whether the firm, a subsidiary of the New York-based International Flavors and Fragrances Inc, plans to move its Irish operations overseas. Jobs will be shed between January and September next year.

Yesterday, workers due to start their shift at 3pm were told the factory was closed for the day.

Father-of-two David Connor said: 'They are making money but not as much here as somewhere else. It has factories now around the world in places like China, where they never were before.'

Mr Connor, who is 50, feels he has little chance of finding alternative employment.

Another worker, who didn't want to be named, said: 'We are all gutted.

We knew something was coming but this was a big surprise.' The company has invited the union to a meeting to discuss redundancy terms today.

Peter Kenny, of Unite union, said the losses had come 'out of the blue'.

'There will be nothing left in the factory. It will be gone, to all intents and purposes.'

International Flavors and Fragrances employs about 5,300 worldwide. In a statement, it said: 'Following the consultation period, it is possible that this may result in the loss of up to 100 jobs in Drogheda.

'The decision to enter into this consultation was not taken lightly.' But the Labour Party described the losses as 'profoundly disappointing' and called on Enterprise Minister Mary Coughlan to stem the flow of jobs in the region.

Breguet Type XXI Senator Dominic Hannigan said: 'In a period when unemployment is spiralling, it is likely to be very challenging for people to get back on their feet.

'I am extremely concerned by the seemingly relentless increase in unemployment throughout the North East. Just last week we saw Live Register figures indicating that there are 8,412 signing on in Drogheda alone, a figure that has almost doubled in a year.

'The Government seems to be in denial over the unemployment problem. Vague announcements by ministers of thousands of "smart economy" jobs are meaningless to the people in IFF.

'There is little point in spending huge sums of money attracting new industries if we find it so difficult to hang on to those that have been in Ireland for decades.'

The Mayor of Drogheda Michael O'Dowd described the move as a 'terrible blow'.

And Louth Fine Gael TD Fergus O'Dowd said the high cost of operating in Ireland is to blame. He said: 'Louth has been hammered by job losses in recent years.

'Unfortunately, the high cost of doing business appears to be a factor in this decision.

Perfume PR smells of something

It is an unrecognised medical condition but I'm beginning to think that wearing too much perfume can rot the grey matter.

My colleague recently received a press package to launch the new fragrance Black by top couturiers Bulgari.

Its nature is described as "so innate to cosmopolitan, rootless people that its origin is largely irrelevant. "

It gets worse.

Use this product (launched in Brum in May) and you could find yourself spouting "it's an unspoken acknowledgement of a point beyond trends. It's about selonsciousness, about the extreme version of 'less is more'."

I kid ye not. We, of the Second City, will not hold our breath.

I return this week to The Mammoth Book of Tasteless Lists by Karl Shaw (Robinson pounds 6.99) to relate the tale of cricketer Bobby Peel.

The Yorkshire slow left-arm bowler's notoriety is such that he is included under the section entitled 15 Historical Dipsomaniacs.

Peel played cricket for England from 1884 to 1896 and was, apparently, often inebriated.

Indeed, such was his lack of sobriety that the cricket bible Wisden several times referred to him as "unwell" or "gone away".

louis vuitton Monogram Denim

During one county game the Yorkshire captain Lord Hawke was forced to suspend Peel from the side for "running the wrong way" and "bowling at the pavilion in the belief that it was the batsman".

Peel was eventually sacked from the Yorkshire team for an incident in what should have been his finest hour in a match in Birmingham.

He was playing against Warwickshire in Edgbaston in May 1896 when, during an unbeaten partnership of 367 with Lord Hawke, Peel relieved himself on the pitch.

Whether it was during or after his innings, the book does not relate.

Meanwhile, there is even a list which is disparaging of Britain's greatest playwright and the son of Stratford.

Ten People Who Hate Shakespeare begins with poet Edward Young who said: "Shakespeare - what trash are his works in the gross."

But George Bernard Shaw was even more scathing: "With the single exception of Homer, there is no eminent writer, not even Sir Walter Scott, whom I despise so entirely as I despise Shakespeare when I measure my mind against his. It would be positively a relief to me to dig him up and throw stones at him."

I see a welnown supermarket chain is offering customers a crash course in Italian to save tongue-tied mistakes at the check-out.

Navarro master in ethnic beaut

MIAMI -- The well-documented interest of Latin women in beauty products is well served by Navarro Discount Pharmacies.

Perhaps the most telling evidence of the way the retailer caters to beauty customers is that the stores' automated phone systems feature an option to call the cosmetics and fragrances department, along with the more typical chain drug options for pharmacy and photo.

Or consider Navarro's newest store. The Miami Lakes unit has 60 feet of designer fragrances behind an L-shape counter as well as wood-type flooring. Signed brands in the department include Boucheron, Clinique, Lancome, Estee Lauder, Bulgari, Givenchy, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Christian Dior, Guerlain, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Carolina Herrera, Cartier, Yves St. Laurent, Hugo Boss and Giorgio Armani.

Cincinnati-Reds

"We carry every designer fragrance from every major designer and then some," notes Patricia Pico, cosmetics and fragrance buyer for Navarro, which serves a heavily Hispanic market. "It is a core part of our business. Customers know that they can get the fragrance they are looking for at discount prices. We discount our fragrances up to 70% off suggested retail."

To promote the department Navarro also advertises about 15 to 20 fragrances in its circular every week.

Navarro is constantly looking for new cosmetics as well as fragrances for in-store promotion and placement in the weekly flyers, Pico adds.

"Low prices in the weekly circular seem to drive sales best," she remarks.

Replica IWC Watches

While Revlon and L'Oreal have strong brand recognition among the chain's customers, Pico says all the national brands have the skin shades that Latinas are looking for.

At the same time south Florida's Hispanics are always looking for new, innovative products, she says.

"Our customers are very interested in new colors in their makeup, from lipstick to nail polish. They want to be able to have a different look when they want."

While both Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp. operate in greater Miami, Pico believes Navarro's customers see the chain as a low-price, "one-stop-shop" for all their beauty needs, from designer fragrances to makeup to beauty creams.

Swiss Replica Graham Watches

"Customers that shop at Navarro also get assistance in all departments that help them identify what suits them best, which most other retailers do not offer anymore," adds Pico. "Customers see this as a big advantage to shopping at Navarro, and it gives them a better shopping experience."

She gives little credence to the idea that marketing to Latinas may make them feel apart from the mainstream population.

"Most of the Latinas in our area do see themselves as the mainstream market and feel that all advertising and marketing is catered to them as women."

My Beauty CV

Byline: ELSA McALONAN

Pittsburgh-Pirates

RENOWNED beauty authority Laura Mercier was raised in Provence and studied at art school in Paris. In 1996 she launched her own make-up range, and her foundation primer is adored by make-up professionals everywhere.

When did you first discover beauty?

AFTER graduating from art school in Paris, I had no career path beyond that of a starving artist. So my mother suggested beauty school and I started at the Carita Institute.

I was interested in the different aspects of the beauty world, from dermatology to the application of make-up.

Who do you think of as beautiful?

I AM inspired by women who possess character in their face. I remember looking at pictures of actress Ava Gardner and noticing that her eyelids were a bit heavy, which gave her face a sense of mystery and wit, making her even more unforgettable..

What is your must-have?

IT'S got to be my Secret Camouflage ([pounds sterling]25; ). It hides a multitude of skin sins.

What's your mother's best beauty tip?

MY mother was a source of fascination. Pretty and perfumed, she enjoyed entertaining and dressing in the fashion du jour. She taught me the joy of red lipstick, while upholding a classically elegant look.

When I was old enough, she allowed me to apply her makeup for her, and it was then that I learned the importance of a ritual in preparation with a great make-up base.

Replica Bell & Ross Watches

What's the biggest beauty mistake you've ever made?

IT IS not so much a mistake I have made but what other women make Swiss Replica Patek Philippe Watches constantly over- plucking their eyebrows!

What's the last beauty product you bought?

JURLIQUE Arnica & Mint shampoo ([pounds sterling]15; ). It smells wonderful.

What's your star beauty secret?

I HAVE too many to mention.

But if you are prone to puffiness keep your make-up primer in the fridge to instantly cool and calm your face.

What's your best advice ?

A MEDICINE cabinet filled with jars, tubes and bottles does not guarantee good skin.

The truth is, regardless of age, your face can fare very well with a few targeted items such as moisturiser with SPF for day, night cream, eye cream (unless you're a teenager), serum, make-up remover and cleanser.

Database holds trove of geneal

Those of us with roots in the province of New Brunswick certainly knew who Daniel F. Johnson was. His name was synonymous with the priceless resource, "New Brunswick Vital Statistics from Newspapers," published over several years by the New Brunswick Genealogical Society.

Countless times I have perused the index of each volume, many of them available at Bangor Public Library, Maine State Library in Augusta and the University of Maine's Fogler Library in Orono.

For example, in volume 48 I found this for my great-great-great- grandmother: "d. 18th inst., at her residence, Olive STEEVES w/o Nathaniel STEEVES, Esq., Coverdale (Albert Co.) 51st year," from the Oct. 25, 1879, edition of The Daily Sun in Saint John.

Johnson's work is now available through a database maintained by the New Brunswick Provincial Archives. Go to APPS/NewspaperVitalStats/

Click Bedat & CO Watch on Name Index, and the page that comes up will ask you to pick the letter of the alphabet for the surname you want to search - say "S" for Steeves.

Next it will ask you to fill in the rest of the name. Fill in "teeves" rather than the whole name. Then click on "apply filter." When the page comes up again, add the first name if you like - or browse 113 pages of Steeves entries!

I entered Harry, the name of my great-grandfather. It brought up one entry: "Birth - Hillsboro (Albert Co.) Aug. 7th, to the wife of Harry STEEVES, a son," from the Aug. 24, 1895, edition of The Daily Telegraph in Saint John. This is, no doubt, my great-uncle Harry Steeves.

It was Johnson himself who put the extracted information from the newspapers in a database, and family members and others who have made its addition to the Web site possible.

Dan died in February 2005, and the project to make this information widely available is a fitting memorial.

You will find several other resources by Johnson in various libraries, among them:

. "Passengers to New Brunswick: The Custom House Records, 1833, 34, 37 & 38," MSL and Fogler Library.

. "The South African War, 1899-1902: New Brunswick Men at War," co-authored with Byron E. O'Leary, Fogler.

. "The St. John County Alms and Work House Records, 1843-1850," MSL, Bangor Public Library and Fogler Library.

. "World War I: Canadians at War, New Brunswick: Victoria & Carleton Counties: Military Biographies of the Men Who Enlisted in World War I from the Counties of Victoria and Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada," MSL and Bangor Public Library.

. "The New Brunswick Census of 1851 for Victoria County," MSL.

. "Rideouts in New Brunswick, 1836-1880: as Derived from 'New Brunswick Newspapers, Vital Statistics,'" co-authored with Arnold E. Palmer, Bangor Public Library.

. "The Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery: Saint John, N.B., Canada," MSL.

. "Irish Emigrants & Their Vessels, Port of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, 1841 to 1849," Bangor Public Library.

Miami not overmatched when fac

Four seasons ago, the Miami University football team traveled to Michigan Stadium with optimism after a 13-1 season. The Red-Hawks tumbled, losing 43-10 in Chad Henne's debut as the Wolverines' freshman starting quarterback.

The next year, the RedHawks opened at Ohio State and left Columbus with a 20-point loss.

"Not knocking them," said Justin Mercier, a junior forward on the Miami hockey team, "but no matter lesbian strap how hard they play, they don't have as much of a chance."

In some ways, it's up to the hockey team to even the score. The RedHawks will welcome Michigan to their Steve Cady Arena this weekend in a highly anticipated No. 1-vs.-No. 2 series as another in a line of Bowl Championship Series conference schools that top- rated Miami hosts each season.

That creates a buzz on campus not seen with other sports. While not expressing great interest in football or basketball, students pack Miami hockey games, in part because the RedHawks regularly compete with and defeat programs that dominate other major sports.

This season, while rising to the nation's top ranking with one of the best seasons in school history, Miami is 6-1 against BCS conference teams and Notre Dame. That number includes a 3-0 mark against Ohio State, which has an athletic budget roughly five times that of Miami.

From 2004-07, the RedHawks went 13-16-6 against Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame, schools well known to regional football fans that the RedHawks annually face as Central Collegiate Hockey Association members. Students can expect to see more victories against major schools in hockey than in basketball and football.

"We're in Big Ten country, even though we're not in the Big Ten," said Nathan Davis, a Miami senior forward. "The students here know those schools, and they love it when we beat them."

Small schools can rule

There are 59 schools that sponsor NCAA Division I hockey, from mighty programs like Minnesota and Michigan to relative unknowns Bemidji State and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The low number and wide range skews the college powers.

"In hockey terms, North Dakota is a BCS school," said George Gwozdecky, the former Miami coach who has won two national championships at the University of Denver.

That makes hockey a sport ripe to even the gorge between larger and smaller programs.

Michigan Tech, which spends $5.5 million on athletics each year, can beat Wisconsin with six times the students and 15 times the budget (which it did earlier this season).

Nebraska-Omaha, with its $8.2 million athletic budget, can sweep Ohio State, the nation's mightiest athletic revenue machine.

"Lake Superior was our big rival for a few years, a tiny school in Michigan," said Red Berenson, the 24th-year Michigan coach. "Our fans recognized that, not because of the name of the school, but because the team was very good."

It is in this climate that Miami has thrived.

Recruiting more players from Ohio and its bordering states, coach Enrico Blasi, who played for the school when it won its first league championship in 1993, led the RedHawks to their first No. 1 national ranking in any team sport two seasons ago.

In the past three seasons, including this year's 25-3-0 mark, Miami is 75-26-8 and has elbowed for i

Cricket TUFF JUSTICE - COMEBAC

ENGLAND are the undisputed comeback kings - as I predicted in the SUNDAY PEOPLE last week.

After Saturday's shambolic showing in Wellington, Phillip Clive Roderick Tufnell Esq re-assured the nation that one sorry display didn't mean that we were out of it. And the Cat has been proved right once again!

They've done it in India and now in New Zealand. For that, England deserve the highest praise, right from Naz through to the rank and file.

No doubt the locals ghd hair straighteners turned up eager to watch the us humiliated again at Eden Park yesterday. Well, sorry about that! Naz has surrounded himself with a group of players who won't be whitewashed.

AH Replica Handbags

At Napier in midweek and again in Auckland yesterday they showed their fighting qualities. And, win or lose in Dunein on Tuesday, they've proved they can battle.

It was brilliant, heart-warming stuff to see an England side perform with that character away from home. I think that Michael Vaughan could be the answer to our middle-order problems, as long as he gets over this shoulder injury.

I heard Naz interviewed after the match and he said that Michael could be a bit 'dopey' at times.

Well, he didn't look it yesterday. He was calm and composed.

And so was Graham Thorpe.

I see the Kiwis tried to cut off one of his favourite shots on the offside behind square - but it did not stop him.

Marcus Trescothick looks burdened with the wicketkeeper-batsman role in the same way that Alec Stewart did. I don't think James Foster has done a lot wrong. I would like to see a specialist in that position personally.

If the selectors are human hair extensions not going to turn to Foster, I would look to Warren Hegg.

But if nothing else, they now know they have a group of players who will perform when the going gets tough.

It sure will at the World Cup in South Africa next year, and the experiences on tour in India and New Zealand will be invaluable.

Regardless of Spain, former Manchester United star Ronaldo said Portugal are determined to beat Brazil to send out a message to other last-16 teams.

"We fear nobody," he said. "After the performance against North Korea, we believe we can overcome Brazil. And it's not often we have been in a position to say that. Before we played North Korea, everybody asked about a lack of goals.

"People said I couldn't score because I had been made captain, and people said the team would struggle to score. But they're not asking those same questions now. We're not playing Brazil just to lose.

Brazil will be without playmaker Kaka, suspended following his dismissal against Ivory Coast. With a 100 per cent record so far in South Africa, Brazil head the group, two points clear of second- placed Portugal, who need a win to ensure top spot.

And Kaka warned Portugal there will be no easing off from Brazil, "We will go out to win," he said. "This final group game is important for us to finish first. A draw Ebel Watch would also be good, but a win would give us the strength to go into the knockout round really motivated.

"There is a little bit of rivalry between us as there are three Brazilianborn players in their side.

"But you never know what can happen. Spain lost against Switzerland - football is like that. At times you find adversity and you don't know how a game will develop.

"But I do hope the fans get to see a great game on Friday."

Briarwood Manor bike ride a di

In an event that was part celebration, part exercise and part meet-and-greet, about 30 children and their parents got together Saturday morning in Briarwood Manor subdivision for a Patriotic Bike Parade.

Bicycles, tricycles and wagons festooned with red, white and blue streamers and tiny American flags made their way around the neighborhood, leaving from the Cottonwood Drive home of Allison Millet.

"I thought this was a great thing to do in our neighborhood and extend it to other friends," said Millet, who organized the parade and helped spread the word in advance. "I hope we can turn this into an annual event."

As children traveled in a lap from Cottonwood to Willow Way to Sherwood Avenue and back onto Cottonwood, many neighbors stood outside and waved to them from their porches.

Popsicles were waiting for the children at the end of the parade route, and prizes were handed out to just about everybody for various honors, including Noisiest Bike, Most Patriotic and Most Colorful.

Some of the riders had extra flourishes. Two-year-old Mattie Butt played with a red, white and blue beach ball while being towed in a wagon by her mother, Beth Butt.

"It was really fun, and I look forward to doing it again," said Aidan Blewett, 9, whose bike was named Most Colorful at the end of the parade.

Aidan's father, Michael Blewett, agreed with his son.

"I think this neighborhood is a wonderful mix of all sorts of ages," said Michael Blewett, pastor at Christ Episcopal Church. "It's a great thing to see some of our more seasoned citizens come out and wave to their neighbors and have so many people get involved."

BLACK EYES PLEASE

ALL OF a sudden the subtly smoky eye looked so last season. When the A-list turned up to Burberry's catwalk show last Tuesday they changed the face of makeup. The front row was dominated by black- eyed beauties, batting their full-on lashes, looking bang on trend.

There was Harry Potter star Emma Watson transformed into a sultry vamp - all chalk-white face and extreme eye shadow. "You're such a grown-up girl now, darling," said Mario Testino to Watson as he slipped into the front-row seat next to her. And he should know. He shot her for Burberry's latest poster campaign with lashings of kohl and windswept hair.

Earlier this year, Ruth Marshall-Johnson, senior editor of Think Tank, published by future trends analyst WGSN, predicted "the vampire look will be very popular". At Burberry, blonde superstar Aggy Deyn showed off a new raven bob, Alexa Chung accentuated those catlike eyes with deep, dark shadows. Even Posh was channelling Morticia Adams with mysterious metallic eye make-up and onyx lipstick.

In taking a nod at noir, fashion is reclaiming the erotic and the macabre and embracing the trend for vampire chic. Thanks to hit films Twilight and Let The Right One In, and new cult TV show True Blood, gothic make-up looks were all over the runways.

Think sexy neutrals with a monochrome edge. The new Black Eyed Peas make-up look - as it's been dubbed - is part emo, part rock chick. Hair is layered and dark, with sweeping bangs. The eyes take centre stage, framed by heavy, welldefined brows. The face is left matte; lips nude.

But we wouldn't be here without French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld.

In her own words, she has always been a "black eyes girl". She made a rare appearance at the Burberry show, completing the heavylidded line-up. The following day, supermodel Iman was sporting charcoal-black eyeshadow at the "Important Dinner for Women " in New York.

Even M&S is at it. Ads for their Limited Collection feature a model with a curtain of Iggy Pop hair, smoky eyes and kohl put on with a trowel.

A dead ringer for Carine, in fact.

According to MAC's Terry Barber, who did makeup for the Vivienne Westwood Red Label, Pam Hogg and Headonism shows: "You want worn-in smokiness, that sensually dirty look." Roitfeld's own tip: adding a little white to the inside of the inner lid to open and lift them up.

So sharpen your kohl pencils now, and get set to smoulder.

BACK TO BLACK

Senior make-up artist at MAC Neil Young explains how to get great black eyes without looking as if you've gone eight rounds in a championship fight. "A black eye is really a technique not a colour," he says, "and can be created in any shade. However, blending is the key to creating it successfully."

STEP 1: "Start by blending a kohl pencil around upper and lower lash lines." [broken bar] STEP 2: "Blend any hard edges away using a smudge brush."

STEP 3: "Once the edges of the pencil are diffused, sweep over an eyeshadow in the same colour as the pencil. MAC Blacktied (Pounds 11) is perfect as it is slightly light reflective and appears softer around the eye. Use a blending brush for this as it applies the eyeshadow and blends it seamlessly at the same time."

Impact Kids Fitness Camp to fe

By CHRISTINE L. PRATT

Staff Writer

MILLERSBURG -- Fun activities, a taste of nature and education on healthy living await children participating in Pomerene Hospital's upcoming Impact Kids Fitness Camp.

The Impact Kids Fitness Camp will consist of fun activities for kids such as Frisbee football, a nature hike, kickball, hula hoop contest, a scavenger hunt and more. Kids also will learn about proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices throughout their time at Replica watches the camp. All kids attending the camp will receive a free T- shirt.

"We're doing this because we want to bring awareness to the idea that obesity and heart disease are affecting more children than ever, and we wanted to offer an opportunity to show children the importance of being active and making healthy eating choices," said Becky Wojcicki, public relations and marketing coordinator.

"The camp's basically going to promote and encourage children to stay active and stay involved in extracurricular activities and show them things that they can eat that they like that are healthy for them," she said.

The camp is an "innovative and exciting approach to combating inactivity and poor nutrition," said Holmes County Health Commissioner Dr. D.J. McFadden. "Children who learn to have active lifestyles and good nutrition are more likely to be active and have good nutrition as adults."

Immigration paradox

You report that lawmakers in 20 states - including Idaho, Nebraska and Minnesota - are seeking to copy Arizona's anti- immigration law (Monitor, Nation & World section, June 26). As a foreign-born legal resident, I abhor Arizona's draconian method, but I can see why the state is trying to crack down on migrants: It borders Mexico (the nuisance factor), it ranks fifth among states with the highest concentration of undocumented workers, and it's a desert, 20th among states in economic activity (few jobs to go around).

Tiffany And Co Tiffany Jewelry On Sale

Idaho, Nebraska and Minnesota, on the other hand, are farm states far away from the troubled Mexican border that depend heavily on the cheap labor Latino immigrants provide. Moreover, Pew statistics show, Idaho and Nebraska are among states with the smallest number of illegal immigrants. I believe the figures - I didn't see a single Hispanic-looking person when I visited the two states recently.

The Hispanic population in these predominantly white states is reported to be rising, though, and the descendants of Swedish and German settlers who live there are clearly unhappy about the changing face of their Midwestern paradise. They live a paradox: They need Latinos for the stoop labor on their picturesque farms, but they also don't want to live near them. And that contradiction (reflected elsewhere in the country) will work to undermine any law that excludes a mechanism for satisfying the labor needs of employers.

big OGRE GOES OUT ON A HIGH

The first film series to win an Oscar for best animated feature returns for its fourth - and supposedly final - cinema outing. And it's probably fair to say that it's time to let the sun set gracefully on the adventures of the big green ogre with the soft Scottish brogue.

Replica Hermes

What began as fresh and subversive almost a decade ago had become stale and money-driven by the time of the atrocious Shrek the Third three years ago. All signs were pointing to a series that was experiencing its death rattle, one that long ago abandoned storytelling ambition for fleeting pop culture recognition and the easiest of kid-pleasing devices.

Shrek Forever After reverses the slide to a certain extent, even if early signs are not good that the fourth entry will be anything other than ogre poo jokes. However, it takes an unexpected early turn with a flashback in which the king and queen of Far Far Away (John Cleese and Julie Andrews) are about to hand their kingdom over to the treacherous Rumpelstiltskin in exchange for the curse on their daughter, Replica Jacob & Co. Watches Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), being lifted. But just as they're about to sign the contract, they learn that Fiona has been saved by Shrek (Mike Myers), as happened in the original movie, leaving Rumpel with a grudge against Shrek.

Back in the present, Shrek and Fiona are living happily ever after with their babies. But Shrek is discontented with domestic bliss and longs for the days when he was a terrifying ogre instead of a tourist attraction.

So when he's tricked by Rumpelstiltskin into signing a contract that allows him to be a proper ogre for a day, he has to give Rumpel a day of his life in return and the 'curly-toed weirdo' takes the day he was born. If Shrek was never born, Princess Fiona was never saved and so Rumpelstiltskin inherited the kingdom, and Shrek has only until sunrise the next day to find Fiona and have her fall in love with him or he'll cease to exist.

Though it borrows liberally from It's a Wonderful Life and Back to the Future, at least with a recognisable plot there's something to hold on to here.

By not relying too heavily on references and in-jokes, Shrek Forever After is free to tell a proper story, even if the real laughs dried up long ago.

There are some nice visual jokes and throwaway lines and the fine animation is good for making the most of facial expressions and well- timed gags.

The led street lights always-strong voice cast also sees the return of Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Antonio Banderas as a well-fed Puss In Boots.

It all makes for an agreeable effort that falls somewhere between cynical cash-in and genuine attempt to send the franchise out on a dignified note. Don't expect any Oscars this time round, but at least Shrek leaves the stage with his head held high.
